Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation with The Physio Clinic Glasgow After Knee Replacement Surgery

The Knee

The knee is the body's biggest joint. It must be sturdy enough to sustain your body weight while yet being flexible enough to allow for bending and twisting. It connects the femur and tibia bone surfaces, which are lined with cartilage to allow for smooth movement between the two bones. The joint is bordered by a synovial membrane, which generates synovial fluid to lubricate, nourish, and minimise friction within the joint. The menisci are two C-shaped pieces of cartilage that sit between the femur and the tibia to absorb trauma.

Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee replacement surgery is most suited for those with debilitating osteoarthritis or joint injury caused by trauma, fractures, or congenital abnormalities. The operation may be indicated if your walking capacity is reduced, you have significant pain and stiffness, and your quality of life is suffering. Before surgery, your physician will most likely propose non-operative therapy including an exercise programme. X-ray and MRI scans will reveal that arthritis has significantly altered the joint and altered articular cartilage. The operation is intended to relieve discomfort, improve range of motion (to a degree) and enhance function.

Knee replacement, commonly known as arthroplasty, is a surgical operation used to resurface an arthritis-damaged knee joint. It is often conducted, with over 75000 operations performed in the UK each year, and is quite effective. There are two main types of knee replacements. A total knee replacement involves replacing the articular surfaces of the femur, tibia, and patella, as well as removing the ACL. A partial knee replacement is an option if only one compartment of the knee is injured. The healthy sections of the articulation surface and cruciate ligaments are retained, which improves function and healing following surgery.
