Golf Physio Glasgow: Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic
A Golf Injury Is More Common Than You Might Think
Golf is one of the most popular sports in Scotland, known for its impact on mobility and overall fitness. You might be surprised to learn that golf injuries are more common than injuries in football and rugby players in Scotland. Golf is often seen as a low-impact sport when compared to the likes of rugby or hockey however, hitting a ball across a golf course is an explosive movement. Keen golfers will repeat this explosive movement hundreds of times per week.
As many as 62% of amateur golfers will experience a golf injury. It's not just the amateurs, though! 85% of professional golfers will also experience an injury due to golf, highlighting the importance of proper conditioning and physiotherapy. There are many reasons for this however, some of the mre common include not don't take enough time to warm up, individual golf swing mechanics causing overloads or simply inadequate conditioning/ strength to tolerate the forces involved.
Golf requires that an individual apply huge forces while twisting through the lower back. It is, therefore, little surprise that golf puts significant forces through spine. It is said that swinging a golf club puts a force equivalent to eight times a person's body weight, emphasising the need for proper conditioning. It isn't just the back; other common golf injuries include injuries to the wrist, elbows, knees and shoulders all of which can affect your function.
Common Golf Injuries
- Wrist Injuries: If you have a 'weak wrist position' and don't have enough wrist and arm strength to lead the golf club, then this can result in injury.
- Elbow Injuries: If you overload the extensor tendons on the outside of the lead forearm can lead to a tendon pain called "golfer's elbow." And an overload of the inner elbow can lead to a tendon pain called "golfer's elbow."
- Shoulder Injuries: You can overload the shoulder resulting in injuries to cartilage/ labrum. It is not unusual to experience acute rotator cuff tears when the ability to accelerate or decelerate your arms on a swing is inadequate.
- Lower back injuries: If you don't have control of your swing or aren't well-conditioned, then the power that is required to rotate the body through the swing can result in pain or injury to the lumbar muscles.
