Physiotherapy for Crossfit Athletes in Glasgow

CrossFit is a high-intensity fitness regimen that combines elements from many sports and strength and conditioning.

What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is a high-intensity fitness regimen that combines elements from many sports and strength and conditioning. It is increasing in popularity across Glasgow and Scotland. The aim of CrossFit is to enhance all-around fitness with strength-based workouts that provide a bit of variety and challenge. It includes exercises such as weightlifting, powerlifting and cardiovascular exercises. The famous CrossFit workout of the day (WOD) is meant to target various aspects of your physical fitness, from strength and endurance to agility and balance.

Common CrossFit Exercises

Box Jumps: A combination of jumping again and off a durable container, it assists leg power and overall stamina.

Deadlifts: picking up a barbell from the ground to the hips and then placing it back down, engages the back, glutes, and hamstrings primarily

Kettlebell Swings: involving swinging a kettlebell from between the knees to above the head; increases core and lower back strength.

Wall Balls: the fastest way to throw a medicine ball high against a wall and catch it in a perfect squat; this works both upper body, lower body and coordination!

Burpees: A full-body exercise that combines a squat, jump and push-up, also great for both cardiovascular fitness and muscle endurance.

Olympic lifts: Snatches and Clean & Jerks for powerful explosive strength and total-body functionality.

Gymnastic movements: From pull-ups and handstands to ring-based movements, these challenge your ability to handle your bodyweight and mobility.

Common Injuries in CrossFit

CrossFit is a relatively high-intensity sport with complex movements performed with intensity and, as such, there is a risk of injury when performing.

Muscle Strains: Lifting too heavy or not warming up sufficiently can cause strains to muscles, especially of the shoulders, back and hamstrings.

Tendinopathy/ Tendinitis: Overuse can lead to tendon pains, particularly in the wrists, knees and elbows.

Rotator Cuff Injuries: The shoulder's rotator cuff can sustain injury during overhead lifts and throws due to the intense loads demanded on this region.

Knee Injuries: If you perform deep squats or box jumps, you may be prone to knee injuries including ligament sprains or meniscus injuries.

Lower Back Pain: Overloading with moves such as deadlifts and snatches can lead to lower back injuries.
