Strength and Conditioning in Physiotherapy

There are several challenges faced by physiotherapists when helping people recover from injury. From restoring mobility and function in the body to managing pain and avoiding overload.

At The Physio Clinic Glasgow our physiotherapists experts in bespoke exercise prescription whether your goals are to recover from injury, improve strength and power or to perform better in sport.

Importance of S+C In Physiotherapy

It goes without saying that physios should know about strength and conditioning. Traditional physiotherapy is often viewed as using low level exercise to address pain or stiffness, or improve range of motion and balance.

BUT modern clinical practice does not simply involve assisting people to rehabilitate. Physiotherapists should also consider themselves strength and conditioning coaches. That is, we should be involved in training people to squat and deadlift, or to apply the principles of progressive overload to improve performance or reduce risk of injury. Not simply prescribing 3 sets of gentle stretches each day.

Physiotherapists should provide bespoke exercise programmes centred around a person's needs. Whether that involve power training to improve strength/  maintain strength, or endurance training to avoid athletes fatiguing during sport.

For best practice, progress must be tracked. Otherwise, how can we measure the effects of training? Outcome measures such as hop tests, dynamometer testing and Y-balance tests are just some of the barrage of assessment tools we may utilise to monitor progress and identify strength imbalances.

Nuance in Strength and Conditioning

At The Physio Clinic Glasgow we are experts in creating bespoke exercise programmes i.e a training regimen specific to your needs. We look at your lifestyle and help fit training around you whether that be five sessions per week, or one.

We can provide strength training programmes, plyometrics training programmes or running plans that are appropriate for your ability and goals. We prioritise teaching training principles/ parameters to maximise performances gain and keep you informed.
